CHARACTER
Name: Agatha "Aggie" Prenderghast
Canon: ParaNorman
Age: 11
Specialty: Mediumship; and while not a specialty (in fact quite the opposite, since she can't control it), sometimes when Agatha becomes angry/scared/upset/etc, she will psychically generate yellow-green electric sparks which have a habit of accidentally setting nearby things on fire. An unusual form of Pyrokinesis or possibly some sort of budding Electrokinesis? It's difficult to tell at this point.
Position: Camper
Personality: Aggie is an outsider, and naturally a very reserved young girl. She's shy, timid, quiet, and often rather introverted. Though she enjoys being outside, she is more the type to keep to herself, sitting under a tree reading a book rather than playing with other kids.
It's not as though she doesn't wish to make friends, however. Throughout her life, Aggie was commonly seen as strange or creepy by most people around her, and over time she's come to believe that about herself. She worries others will think she's too weird to be around, and because of her emotion-driven powers, she also doesn't wish to possibly hurt them.
While Aggie is usually well-mannered, kind, generous, compassionate, sympathetic, and helpful to those in need, she has fierce mood swings. When she loses her temper or becomes extremely angry, upset or scared, it tends to show in her abilities. She fears this own side of herself and hurting someone without meaning to do so. Normally, she would never cause harm to anyone, though she has a bit of a naive view of karma; that terrible people or those who do horrible things should always suffer for it.
As a result of this, she prefers to stay unnoticed and out of the way. While she may come across as distrusting, she's more just nervous, apprehensive and careful. She assumes people are judgmental, because they so often are, especially to her for being different. She is lonely, and would honestly like to be more outgoing, but it is difficult for her considering how others tend to view her, as well as her own anxiety.
She is, however, more open with the ghosts she sees and speaks to. She is friendly with the dead, as they are usually friendly with her. It's easier for her to talk to them, and she enjoys their company. Though she often feels like one, she realizes she isn't a ghost herself, and thinks it would be nice to have some living friends too. Still, she is very grateful for the friends she does have, non-living or otherwise.
She is sheltered, being from a reserved, pious and skeptic community. However she does understand how cruel and harsh the world can be, partly because of this.
Aggie's favorite hobby is reading, and can regularly be found with a book in her hand. She is especially fond of fantasy stories and fairy tales, as well as any sort of epic adventure. It's her preferred method of escapism from the often less exciting real world, though stories also help her to cheer up, calm down or relax.
AU History:
(It's important to note that in the AU, the Prenderghasts and the Babcocks are an entirely separate family with no relation or connection whatsoever!)
Aggie was born the night of a terrible lightning storm, the bolts striking and knocking down several trees around the hospital, in a small historic town that looked more to the past than to the future. Most of its residents were old-fashioned and preferred traditional ways of doing things. When Aggie was very young, her father mysteriously disappeared. However, to this day Aggie has not been able to find her father's ghost, so she holds out hope he may still be alive out there somewhere.
Speaking of ghosts, it didn't take long for Aggie's mother to realize the invisible people she often noticed her daughter speaking to weren't simply imaginary friends. She knew her daughter had a very special gift, but unfortunately, others in town treated Aggie more like she was cursed. She didn't fit in with the other children, who considered her a "weird freak" and mostly avoided her. The adults worried for her, or in some cases, feared she was under the possession of something unholy. Mrs. Prenderghast tried to assure her friends and neighbors nothing was wrong with her daughter, but she remained a subject of concern and ostracized by her peers.
Luckily, things eventually became clearer when an agent from Psychonauts HQ came to visit Aggie and her mother. The agent informed the Prenderghasts that the Psychonauts had detected a rise in spirit activity in their town along with another; Blithe Hollow, Massachusetts. In Blithe Hollow they had found a young medium and were not surprised to discover Aggie in a similar position. Coincidentally the two happened to even be the same age, and also just like the boy in Massachusetts, Aggie was offered a chance to attend Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp.
Mrs. Prenderghast was very supportive of her daughter having the opportunity to learn more about her gift, and meet other kids who were special like her. While Aggie herself was a little more unsure, what convinced her was how kind, open, and non-judgmental the agent was. They immediately understood Aggie's position, and didn't think she was strange or creepy at all. They believed she was just a little girl with a very special gift, which gave her hope that she wouldn't be alone, and there would be others there who wouldn't treat her like an outcast.
What also helped to make the decision easy for Aggie was the honest fact she had powers she barely understood, and had little control over. Her whole life she feared hurting others from being unable to control her abilities, but now had to opportunity to be properly trained. This way, she would learn to control her powers, and would never have to worry about hurting anyone again.
And so, Aggie packed her bags, hugged and kissed her mother goodbye, Mrs. Prenderghast promising to write her every week and call her every day, and left for Whispering Rock.
Mental World:
(Much of this description comes from the ParaNorman novel, if that's alright!)
Aggie's mental world is a forest carpeted with lush grass and wildflowers. Overhead is a canopy of golden-green leaves, with sunlight pouring down through them. In the center is a large beautiful tree that's young and strong, its bark thick and healthy, branches heavy with leaves and tiny scented blossoms. The air smells of young wood, fresh earth and flowers. Brightly colored butterflies can commonly be found fluttering around.

However, when Aggie is highly upset or furious, her mental world changes. It becomes night and the forest goes desolate, the trees old and gnarled with rotting limbs. The earth is barren and cracked, and depending on the level of Aggie's anger or distress, may break apart into floating platforms in an abyss of ghostly smoke. There is always a storm; a tempest with harsh wind and powerful lightning that constantly strikes the now twisted center tree.

The storm subsides and the forest returns to its bright and blissful state when Aggie calms down.

"Hey Aggie, do you wanna help cook burgers with us?"
That's what one of the other campers had asked Agatha. Though she was a little nervous her first time here at summer camp, she didn't want to pass up the opportunity to make new friends and try new things. Back at home she would cook with her mother sometimes, but she had never made hamburgers before. How hard could it be, though?
One of the other campers had already gotten the charcoal burning on the outdoor grill, so all Aggie had to do was put the hamburgers on and turn them over as they cooked. She carefully placed the meat patties on the grill, watching them curiously as they sizzled. Easy, right?
A few minutes passed and she noticed the burgers not doing much as far as changing color; they were still quite pink. Perhaps it was time to turn them over? With the spatula in her hands she carefully flipped them all over to other side, but even then the meat hadn't darkened very much at all. Aggie frowned. Was the grill not hot enough? Maybe she just had to keep waiting.
So she waited. And waited. And waited. She waited several more minutes, her frown eventually changing into a scowl when no progress seemed to be made. She was beginning to lose her patience, especially since she was actually rather hungry.
Another minute passed, and she became more impatient, until...
"Just COOK ALREADY!"
She snapped aloud, releasing psychic sparks from her loss of temper. The yellow-green electrical energy hit the burgers, setting them on fire as Aggie gasped and staggered back slightly, flinching. However, the flames faded quickly, and once they did, she stepped forward to surprisingly see the burgers were not burnt to a crisp. In fact, they looked delicious, fully cooked and ready to serve.
That was certainly one way to get them well-done.
